  • Florence’s currency is Euros

  • Streets are made of cobblestone so it’s hard to walk with roller luggage
  • If you need a cheap place to stay, I would recommend a hostel
  • Florence does not have a nightlife but you can often find people drinking wine in the streets

Top Things to Do

1. Accademia Museum: Statue of David

florence/david-florence.jpg

I usually don’t love museums but this one was awesome. In the Accademia Museum, you can see the actual Statue of David by Michaelangelo & many of his earlier pieces. I would plan to arrive between early morning and 11am because the museum gets pretty packed and not everyone gets the chance to go in before close. Typically, you can buy tickets at the door.

2. Ponte Vecchio

This is a pretty famous medieval stone arch bridge that was the only bridge in Florence until 1218. It doesn’t look like much from far away but once you get onto the bridge you'll find gold and jewelry shops everywhere. I personally wasn't too into the styles of jewellery but I did think it was pretty cool to be on the only bridge that survived during Search Results Web results World War II in Florence. Some suggest visiting the bridge by taking a boat ride on the Arno River. We didn't have time to do that, but it looked like a fun little trip.

3. Piazza Del Duomo

florence/plazo-duomo-florence.jpg

Piazza Del Duomo is the most beautiful Cathedral I have ever seen. It's covered with pink white and green marble which makes it look like a church from a story book. I would suggest visiting during the day and night because it looks pretty different. During the day you can see the intricacies of each building and at night, it looks animated. You can visit the inside between the hours of 10am - 4:30pm Monday through Saturday, but it's closed on Sundays.

4. San Lorenzo Market

LOVED this market! Directly outside of the market you can find amazing real leather goods, and inside you can find all types of foods, drinks, olive oils, truffles and more. Most of the leather goods are real leather so if you're not into that I would suggest not purchasing anything. If you do want a couple of leather pieces, I would recommend the purses or backpacks. You'll have the opportunity to shop for any other souvenirs in this location as well. In terms of snacks, we found sliced truffles in oil were extremely cheap in comparison to the cost in America so we bought a couple of jars. If you've never had truffles, they taste great on slices of a baguette.

5. Piazzale Michelangelo

florence/florence-steps.jpg

The absolute most breathtaking view of Florence. I could not soak up enough of this outlook. There are little shops up top with snacks & goodies but I would grab a bottle of wine, some food and have a picnic up there. The best time to visit is in the early morning & a great place to take pictures. You can also see a perfect view of Basilica of Santa Croce Santa Croce, which is where Michaelangelo and other "Ninja Turtle" artists are buried.

When in Florence...Take a MINI TRIP!

Tuscany

You can live out your romcom dreams and go wine tasting under the Tuscan sun! While in Florence you can find various guided trips to Tuscany to not only go wine tasting but also to visit smaller surrounding towns and plazas with great food and shopping. We found our tour through the visitors center at the Plus Florence Hostel, where we stayed. I wouldn't recommend booking a tour before you visit because you can often find better deals and negotiate lower prices once you're in Florence. Once on the tour you can look forward to wine tasting in the various vineyards of Tuscany so come prepared with your wallets in case you'd like to purchase any wine to take home.

Top Places to Take Cute Pictures

Piazzale Michelangelo

florence/krizzle-florence.jpg

This is one of the most beautiful views in Italy, and perfect for scenic photos. Once you arrive, you can take a picture up top or walk toward the bottom balcony for a different view. If you have one, bring your camera instead of your cell phone to take pictures in this spot because a cell phone isn't always good enough to capture the view.

Tuscany

The Gothic Quarter is swarming with opportunity for pictures. My two favorite spots are taking pictures near the cathedral and near the palm trees in Placa Reial. There are a ton of little alley ways that you can find to take pictures as well.

You’ll never be the same again if you love steak! Florentine Steak is a juicy piece of meat that melts in your mouth. Most places (not including touristy spots) will make a good florentine steak. They do sell by the oz so ask the cost per oz and then you can decide how much you want.

Gelato topped with Prosciutto

Gelato in Italy is a dream, but if you're open to trying new things, try it topped with prosciutto. It's amazing!

Gelato

If you’re a fan of Gelato, I would argue the best gelato in Europe can be found at Gelateria Artigianale La Strega Nocciola. Make a quick stop there & walk over the Ponte Vecchio.
